This paper describes Project ReLaTe, a remote language teaching application which uses multicast multimedia conferencing over SuperJANET. This is a joint project between the University of Exeter and University College London, funded by British Telecom as part of the BT/JISC SuperJANET research initiative. The aim of the project is to develop a remote language teaching demonstrator, and to evaluate its potential for sharing language teaching resources in a series of trials over SuperJANET. The demonstrator system provides video and audio conferencing facilities, shared workspace tools such as a shared whiteboard, and access to on-line dictionaries, grammars other multimedia teaching materials. The project is developing an improved multicast audio tool, adapting an existing software video tool, and providing lip-synchronisation between the audio and video streams. Finally, the project will develop an application-specific user interface for remote language teaching and evaluate the system in trials with tutors and students., |
