Abstract : Scalable secure key distribution is the most important feature of a scalable secure multicast protocol. Most of the existing scalable secure group communication protocols are based on a hierarchical key distribution tree. In this paper, we compare some existing hierarchical key distribution schemes through simulation using real-life multicast group membership traces. Our simulations demonstrate the advantages of a hierarchical node based protocol called DEP. We show that in general hierarchical node based approaches better distribute the encryption cost among dierent entities of a key distribution tree.
