This paper addresses Artificial Life as an example of biologically inspired research. I discuss the general methodology and propose an interactive approach towards studying interactions and couplings of an agent within its social and non-social environment. Believability and embodiment are introduced as central concepts to this approach. The paper gives examples of agent-environment interactions along my research on socially intelligent agents. I report on two ecological experiments with robots which are carefully adapted to their environment. Adaptation comprises both the design of the agent's `morphology', as well as the dynamic coupling which results from the link agent/environment and control program. The dynamic agentenvironment coupling is implemented with a behaviour-orientated, parallel control architecture., |
